    Do you know the difference between the internet and the world wide web? Do you know the languages of these technologies and how they came to be? Is there even such thing as “The Cloud”? In this lesson you will learn what is involved in web design, what the internet is, where it came from, and the languages that are used to create websites.

  • Week 2 -

    HTML & CSS

    Now we can start making webpages. In this lesson we will learn the structure of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). You will understand what it means to use HTML to markup the content of your webpages and how we use CSS to style our sites.

  • Week 3 -

    Planning A Website

    In this lesson we will discuss the techniques used to plan a website. Whether it’s to convey your vision to a client or to plan a personal project; This lesson will teach you about wireframes, colour theory, and website layout techniques.

  • Week 4 -

    Responsive Web Design & CSS Tricks

    The main focus of this lesson is what is known as Responsive Web Design, this is the standard of modern web design. This means that we develop a single website that will fit to any screen size. We will see how CSS is used to make this happen by using Media Queries to test screen sizes and apply specialised styling.

  • Week 5 -

    Libraries, Frameworks, & Animations

    There are many libraries and frameworks available to designers to enhance their creations. Libraries and frameworks can add new functionalities to your site and help speed up the development process. In this lesson we will discuss the various resources available to Web Designers, why and when they are used.

  • Week 6 -

    Media, Copyright & Menus

    Do you know the pros and cons of different media types? Do you know the trade-offs between lossless and lossy compressions? In this lesson you will learn the different file types, their traits, and how to choose the appropriate file type for your projects. We will also be making menu bars to join our web pages together into a website.

  • Week 7 -

    Going Live

    In this lesson you will learn all that is required to put your creations on the World Wide Web. We will cover domain name registration, choosing a hosting provider, and uploading content to the web. This lesson will show you a live demo, start to finish of uploading a project to a hosting provider.

  • Week 8 -

    Past, Present, Future

    Can you design a webpage for a smart watch? What about an immersive 3D web site for virtual reality gear? In this lesson we will be looking into the near future of next gen tech. We will create a VR scene using mark-up, and we will look at how these new technologies impact our designs.

Module II - Web 3.0 - All About Semantics Semester

  • Week 1: Introduction to Web 3.0 expand

    Our first week will give you an introduction to the Web Design course and Web Technologies in general. We will be covering the new tags available in HTML5 and we will be looking at advanced CSS selectors to take advantage of specificity. We will also be exploring more advanced code editors available to web designers.

  • Week 2: HTML5 & CSS3 Extended expand

    In our second week we will be looking at more features of HTML and CSS. We will create a number of small projects to demonstrate the functionality of these new features.

  • Week 3: Mobile First Design expand

    In these lessons we will be discussing principals of Mobile First Design. You will be training to think like a mobile first designer and we will put this to practical use by creating a landing page with mobile first design principles.

  • Week 4: Building a Portfolio Website expand

    In this week we will be building a portfolio website using HTML5 and CSS3. We will be taking all the knowledge gained from the previous weeks to develop our pages with Web 3.0 and mobile first principles at the forefront.

Module III - Building with Bootstrap

  • Week 1: The Bootstrap Framework expand

    Now that you have a grasp of the new tags and experience with mobile first design, it’s time to introduce you to frameworks. Bootstrap is a mobile first framework that allows us to get a head start on our projects. In this week we will be looking at the functionality of Bootstrap and the various ways to include the framework in our projects.

  • Week 2: Bootstrap Extended expand

    In our second week we will be looking at more features of Bootstrap. We will have a number of small projects to demonstrate the functionality of these new features.

  • Week 3: The HTML Club 3.0 expand

    In this week we will be merging mobile first design with our new found Bootstrap skills to create an extended version of our HTML Club project. This project will make use of a number of Bootstraps features and demonstrate how frameworks can be used to speed up the development of mobile first websites.

  • Week 4: Bootstrap Templates expand

    Not all projects need (or can) be started from a blank editor. In these lessons we will be looking at the Bootstrap templates available to designers. We will use one of these templates to create a small company website to further demonstrate how quickly we can get to finished project using frameworks and templates.

Module IV - Working with WordPress

  • Week 1: The WordPress Content Management System expand

    A Content Management System is one of the greatest resources available to a web designer. A content management system can take on the role of skills you have yet to acquire and WordPress is the most popular CMS available on the web. In this lesson we will be looking at various ways to incorporate and set up the WordPress CMS on our local machines and online servers.

  • Week 2: Editing Templates and Plugins expand

    In this lesson we will be exploring WordPress themes and plugins. We will be learning how to use these effectively and how to keep your site up-to-date.

  • Week 3: Advanced Templates and Plugins expand

    In our third week we will be exploring how to edit existing themes and plugins. We will also be exploring how to make our own themes and basic plugins for our WordPress developments.

  • Week 4: Building a Company Website expand

    In our final week we will be building an ecommerce company website using the WordPress CMS. This development will follow the six step design process and make use of a range of skills acquired throughout this course.

    Introduction to web development from Shaw Academy is a fantastic starting point for anybody that wants to enter into the web design/development arena. With interactive classes twice a week with the great option to answer questions interactively or email the tutor gives is s big plus! The interactive lessons are then put into the members area so you can watch over and over again - html/css/Java and backend/server you are not going to pick it up by just watching the video once!This course gives a great basic understanding into web development and looking forward to the last couple of lessons then the advanced course.
