What is BMI?
BMI which stands for Body Mass Index and measures a person’s weight compared to their height. BMI classifies people into categories based on their measurements i.e. underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. Now we all know that once you start falling into the overweight category, this means bad news for your health. However, what if your body consists of mostly muscle and you still fall into the overweight category? In this instance you are most likely not at risk of the health conditions associated with excess body fat. Now you are confused, right? You thought the BMI was the best indicator of health but now I am telling you that you can be in the overweight category and still be healthy if your body consists of mostly muscle. So how do you know if you really are at a healthy weight? Well this is where waist circumference comes in.
How do you measure waist circumference?
Did you know that it is the weight which you carry around your middle (abdomen) which is the most detrimental to your health! The dreaded “Apple Shape” can result in hypertension, type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In fact, you could be in the normal range of BMI and still be at a health risk if you carry too much weight around the middle. So, this is one of the MOST important body measurements you can take (of course there are also many more). So….grab your measuring tape and start measuring.
