BMI Vs Waist Circumference – The Great Debate
There is a lot of debate when it comes to body measurements as to which one is the best?! Confusing topic eh? BMI which stands for Body Mass Index and measures a person’s weight for their height and gives them an indication of which weight category they fall into i.e. underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. Now we all know that once you start falling into the overweight category, this means bad news for your health. However, what if your body consists of mostly muscle and you still fall into the overweight category?? In this instance you are most likely not at risk of the health conditions associated with excess body fat. Now you are confused, right? You thought the BMI was the best indicator of health but now I am telling you that you can be in the overweight category and still be healthy if your body consists of mostly muscle. So how do you know if you are at health risk?
Well this is where waist circumference comes in. Did you know that it is the weight which you carry around your middle (abdomen) which is of the most detriment to your health? The dreaded “Apple Shape”. In fact you could be in the normal range of BMI and still be at health risk if you carry too much weight around the middle.
